For the Bethel region, the heating fuel of the future might be a throwback to the past. A business and organizations there, including Bethel's city government, are increasingly turning to firewood in an effort to replace the costly heating fuel that often exceeds $6 a gallon. They're getting the wood any way they can get in the often treeless Southwest Alaska region.

Seven Alaska state senators flew to the small Spruce Island village of Ouzinkie on a rainy Wednesday afternoon to tour the town's energy facilities and conduct a public hearing. The seven senators were Senate President Gary Stevens, R-Kodiak; Tom Wagoner, R-Kenai; Lyman Hoffman, D-Bethel; Johnny Ellis, D-Anchorage; Lesil McGuire, R-Anchorage; Bill Wielechowski, D-Anchorage; and Joe Thomas, D-Fairbanks. Sens. Hollis French, D-Anchorage; and Bert Stedman, R-Sitka, left after the events Wednesday.

The Alaska Legislature voted Monday to override former Gov. Sarah Palin's veto of $28 million in federal stimulus money for energy cost relief. But it was as close as a vote can get. Reversing a governor's appropriation veto requires a vote of 75 percent of the Legislature, a hurdle rarely met.

As governor, I did my utmost to warn our legislators that accepting stimulus funds will further tie Alaska to the federal government and chip away at Alaska's right to chart its own course. Enforcing the federal building code requirements, which Governor Parnell and future governors will be forced to adopt in order to accept these energy funds, will eventually cost the state more than it receives. There are clear ropes attached   -Sarah Palin
